Alternativfondet was established in 1980. Through launching the foundation, the initiators sought to focus on promoting scientific research using non-animal methods.
Alternatives
The best way of abolishing animal experiments is by putting something else in its place. Not least for ethical reasons, researchers should be encouraged to seek out non-animal methods. This is the basis for establishing Alternativfondet.
Purpose
The purpose of the foundation is to provide support for information on and promotion of the development and use of alternative methods – with the purpose of replacing the use of animals with animal free methods.
How is the money used?
The foundation distributes money to research projects which, in the estimation of the board, meet the foundation’s requirements. In addition, the Nordisk Forskningspris til Alternativer til Dyreforsøg (Nordic Prize for Alternatives to Animal Experiments) is awarded annually by Alternativfondet in cooperation with a Swedish and a Finnish foundation. The prize is 55.000 DKK.
Where does the money come from?
Alternativfondet is financially independent and does not receive any form of governmental support. The foundation depends completely on voluntary contributions. Therefore it is of great importance for the future of the foundation that people with respect for animals make a will in aid of Alternativfondet.
